Pick 3 Pinterest Picks - April

This has turned out to be my favourite linky! I absolutely LOVE Pinterest. Thank you to PAWSitively Teaching and The Inspired Owl's Corner for hosting.

This is a super catchy song about the signs of spring! We could not stop listening to it last year. Sorry if it gets stuck in your head! :) Click on the link to bring you to the video.

Last year at this time, I was lucky enough to fall into an extended position teaching kindergarten. A week or so after I started, the school I was at underwent a "district review" which consisted of some very important people from the board touring each classroom looking for evidence of different board initiatives. I was a little nervous but the teacher I was replacing had a beautiful classroom and I was up for the challenge. One thing my teaching partner and I wanted to do before the review was to spruce up the classroom with a spring display. The students were very interested in birds at the time and when I saw this craft on Pinterest, I knew it would be awesome! Here are a few pictures of how it went!

First, each student painted half of a paper plate brown. We left these to dry until the next day.

We used shredded paper and some leftover chow mein noodles for the nest pieces.

The kiddos weren't quite ready to cut out their own ovals so I drew some templates and photocopied them onto card stock.

We gave them the choice to put however many birds they wanted in the nest and to choose whichever colour combinations they wanted. It was neat to see their little personalities shine through in their art work!

They really seemed to enjoy this project. It was a lot of fun.

Here are some up close! Some students decided to make the ovals smaller so they could represent a "mama and baby". So cute!

The final display! I loved seeing how each student added a personal touch. Some even have moustaches! :) Oh and, the district review went really well!! :)

The task behind this pin is to pick up trash and put it in a jar of water and to wait and see how the water looks after the trash has sat in the water for a few days. This represents how our water is polluted when we litter. I thought this was a neat idea for Earth Day. A real eye opener! It would also be a good extension of a walk around the school yard to pick up litter.

Click on the picture below for a little Earth Day FREEBIE I made recently! :) Enjoy!!

  2. The birds in the nests turned out so cute! I love how powerful real life, hand-on experiments can be. I bet that pollution activity really stuck with the kids! Thank you for sharing and linking up! :)
